What to do at 4am?
Well to be fair, this opportunity isn't available every day of the year! But it was on 28th August 2026 - A partial lunar eclipse.
It was a bit last minute deciding to set my alarm and placing the camera and lens next to the bed. Forecast said cloud cover was possible and moon would be quite low (it wasn't either).
As always when I set an alarm, i was awake about half hour before it went off (how does that work??), so disabled it and trod carefully and silently up to the loft room. Yes a moon was visible - window opened, put the 70-300mm lens on, and thought about settings.
My first thought was I should have thought about this before. I knew the moon is bright, and I was going to be at 300mm so, I went Manual, 1/500sec, f8 and kept ISO100. Manual focus set to infinity, and beyond, and IS left on as tripod was downstairs.
Some playing with settings and reviewing as eclipse progressed and with hindsight I probably under-exposed them. Some cropping in Lightroom and a few other changes but pretty happy and learnt quite a bit!
